In Global Service Corps, volunteers have the opportunity not only to do good in developing countries, but also to immerse themselves in the culture and lifestyle of the communities they serve. Here is an example of one of the many holidays that volunteers may have the opportunity to participate in!

In February or early March, one important holiday celebrated both in Thailand and Cambodia is Magha Puja Day, which commemorates a day when 1,250 monks from all different places, and on their on initiative, spontaneously came to pay homage to the Buddha.

On this day, Buddhists gather at sunset in their local temples to participate in candlelight processions called Wian Tian. These ceremonies express appreciation for the order of monks founded by the Buddha and for the Three Jewels — the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. The spiritual aims of the day are: not to commit any kind of sins; do only good; and purify one’s mind.

This year, Magha Puja Day falls on February 25, 2013.
