Volunteers Make Summer Day Camp Great

This summer you can help Tanzanian high schoolers learn important lessons for life in a fun setting, as a volunteer or for internship or university credit.  About Day Camp: click here.

My most memorable experience in Tanzania without a doubt was the second week of Day Camp (HIV/AIDS, Health, Nutrition and Life Skills Day Camp, which Global Service Corps hosts every summer in Arusha-area high schools).  The first week we spent getting to know our students and what drove them, but the second week was just awesome.  We developed some classroom incentives and restructured our teaching style from the first week. Attendance was nearly perfect, participation was almost too much sometimes, discussions were a treat to lead, and I really felt that the kids got a lot out of the experience. The last day, as expected, was sad, but I truly felt we left the kids with more knowledgeable than what they had starting camp and that they are better able to handle some of the difficulties they may face as young adults in the coming years.
